PARENT GUIDE
A gentler beginning starts before the first day.
Starting preschool is a change for the whole family. A few familiar routines and an agreed plan can make the first weeks easier to understand.

BEFORE THE FIRST DAY
Make the new experience more familiar.
Talk in concrete terms
Describe a few things your child may do: hang up a bag, choose a toy, listen to a story and come home with you. Avoid promises that every moment will feel exciting or easy.
Practise one small routine
A familiar bag, a simple goodbye phrase or a predictable journey can provide continuity. Practise without repeatedly testing whether the child will cry.
Share what helps
Tell the team about comfort objects, home languages, familiar songs and signs of tiredness or worry. Agree what can be brought and how it will be used.
Keep the goodbye clear
Agree the handover with the team. A warm, honest goodbye is easier to understand than disappearing unexpectedly. Ask how you will receive an update and when to discuss the settling plan.
IN THE FIRST WEEKS
Look for a pattern over time.
Allow feelings
Excitement and worry can exist together. Listen to what your child communicates and avoid comparing their response with another child’s.
Keep home expectations manageable
A new social environment can be tiring. A calm routine after the session may be more useful than adding several structured activities.
Review together
Share changes in sleep, mood or behaviour with the team and ask what they notice during the session. If a difficulty persists, agree a next step rather than assuming it will resolve without support.
